Funny Mr Hung offered us the chance to travel twenty minutes up the river in the darkness to see a colony of fire flies. Full and tired we declined in favour of bed, confusing them for the glow worms we had seen twice in New Zealand.
What a mistake.
I woke at 2am to Clare's insistent tapping on my shoulder. Beyond the mosquito net danced two green ethereal lights, each the size of a headache tablet. We had declined an invitation to see the fireflies and so they had come to visit us instead.
For several minutes we were transfixed in silence, watching the wonder above us.
The lights bobbed and weaved around the room, casting a glow strong enough to light the nearby walls and netting. Then they were gone through the plantation blinds, leaving us to imagine what the spectacle of a whole colony of these enchanting creatures would have looked like in the absolute blackness of a Vietnamese forest at night.
I have fallen asleep to thoughts of fireflies every night since.
